Two Movie Reviews in One
I know that both of these two movie reviews are way long overdue now, but still, I am posting them because I loved both movies due to their entertainment value and genres. One of the movies is a modernized adaptation of a classic novel which was given a new twist that is packed with adventure and comedy, while the other one is rated sizzling hot because of the main leads and the intelligent storyline. Let's see what they are but I'm sure you already have hints on what these movies are... hehehe! On with the reviews!
I'm sure if the original author of this classic novel, Jonathan Swift, had watched this modernized version by actor/producer Jack Black, he will be glad that his famous character Gulliver, has given a chance to be retold in a such a way that the people of today would highly appreciate and understand. "Gulliver's Travels" (2010) movie is based on the first part of the many adventures by Lemuel Gulliver. In this movie, Gulliver voyaged to the land of the Lilliput people where he finds himself the biggest creature in the land.
Jack Black was reported to be a hands-on producer and actor in this hit adventure-comedy film. Modern technology cameras and digital effects have given this movie a whole new twist, which I think was done, the Jack Black way (hint: School of Rock)!
Storywise, however, Jack Black's modernized adaptation of "Gulliver's Travels" is somehow not true to the original well-loved novel by Jonathan Swift. I guess that's why they called it "modernized" for nothing if done otherwise... hahaha! In this movie, it was Gulliver's travels to the land of the Lilliputs was the only focus of the story. Lemuel Gulliver (Jack Black) also traveled to the land of the giants in this film, however, that story was not given much emphasis as it was given in the original novel. But of course, watching Jack Black on the big screen has always been a fun-filled and enjoyable experience. So, I must say, yeah.. I love Jack Black's charisma on the big screen.. he simply rocks!
I haven't really watched any of the movies by actor Jake Gyllenhall, but I always love watching Anne Hathaway's films. Anne Hathaway is someone who's always refreshing to watch, I guess you already know that she is one of my favorite actresses in Hollywood! Her performances in movies such as "The Princess Diaries" and "Ella Enchanted" are simply captivating and endearing to watch! Hahaha.. Her big expressive eyes and lovely, killer smile can simply make someone to fall for her without even trying.
I wasn't really focused at first on the story and plot of "Love and Other Drugs" until the moment I already saw Anne Hathaway in a very awkward but somehow lovely moment with Jake Gyllenhaal. Yeah, yeah, I know, Anne Hathaway's boob was shown, and like they say.. the rest is history...
"Love and Other Drugs" has a rating of R-13 because of some exposures not suited for children 13 years old and below. Both actors, even though they have both nakedly exposed bodies (not the ones showing their private parts), are very believable to watch on-screen. Their performances earned them each a Golden Globes nomination but failed to grab the trophies for each category they were in.
I love every (sex) scenes of which both of them have acted, especially when Anne Hathaway's character, Maggie Murdock is shivering while she and Jake Gyllenhaal's character, Jamie Randall are having the time of their lives. That scene was touching and moving, you can feel love on both characters. Of course, you should watch the film to confirm everything that I have said, if it is true or not, or if I am just making a buzz out of it.
Overall, watching these two new movie offerings is truly a blast! However, even though "Gulliver's Travels" is being offered in 3D, I think, watching it on regular cinemas would not change the thrill, otherwise, for an upgraded cinematic experience, watching it in 3D is still okay. On the other hand, "Love and Other Drugs" should be watched with parents' supervision especially if you are a teener and loves both Jake Gyllenhall and Anne Hathaway! Thumbs up to both movies!
