Harry Potter is the new top-grossing franchise in history
Update: Harry Potter is the new top-grossing franchise of all time. As of July 20, 2011, the eight movies of Harry Potter already earned $2.223 billion, defeating Star Wars with only $2.218 billion.
First, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 break records as the highest-grossing opening day on July 15, 2011 with a whopping $92.1 million, toppling former record-holder The Twilight Saga: New Moon which listed $72.7 million.
Then, the final installment of the Harry Potter series again makes history by topping the box office charts as the highest grossing opening weekend. Deathly Hallows Part 2 drew some $169.2 million from die-hard fans who even went on cinemas in wizard costumes. It dethroned The Dark Knight (2008) which marked a $158.4 million in its first weekend.
In the worldwide scene, Deathly Hallows 2 breaks more weekend opening records amassing $481.5 million, 20% above the former record-holder, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009) which made $394.
The question that now hangs in everyone's mind: Is Harry Potter the new top-grossing franchise in history?

Thecurrent previous holder of the title of top-grossing franchise in history is Star Wars, which released its first movie on May 1977 and its last movie on August 2008. The Star Wars franchise has made $2.218 billion in its stint in the theaters.
As of July 18, 2011, the Harry Potter franchise has now earned a total of $2.177 billion, just $41 million shy of making another history.
The first movie, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, made the most money in the series with $317.6 million.
Update: As of July 19, 2011, the Harry Potter franchise made a total of $2.211 billion, some $7 million more to break Star Wars' record.
