Movie Review: Attack on Titan/ Shingeki no Kyojin Live Action Movie

The movie theatre was filled with fans of the manga and anime hit "Attack on Titan / Shingeki no Kyojin" last night. One of the most anticipated adaptations from manga/anime to live action movie, Attack on Titan is the first of the two parts movie that is surely worth the wait. Here are our thoughts on the film (may contain spoilers*):

• Cinematography and special effects were highly realistic and it give the viewers the similar vibe from the manga and anime series. One of our favorite scenes was the sudden appearance of the colossal Titan and the destruction of the wall). The eeriness and frightening nature of the Titans were captured brilliantly in the film.

• The changes on the plot of the film against the manga/anime is noticeable. The purist fans of the manga/anime might feel a little off with the drastic changes in the plot. But if you look at the film as a stand alone version/art form you would surely appreciate how they weaved and mend factors and characters from the original material.

• Have I said that the Titans are awesomely rendered and it is as if they are creatures from your freakiest nightmare that came to life on the big screen? And those weird noises they make whenever they squabble and eat humans alive (priceless, a masterpiece of terror)

• We enjoyed the steam punk feel of  the Three Dimensional Maneuver Gear (立体機動装置 Rittai kidō sōchi), also called Vertical Maneuvering Equipment or Omni-directional Mobility Gear, the set of gear developed by humans that allows great mobility when facing the Titans in combat. It allows the squad to maneuver into the sky as if they are flying, turning the battle field into a 3D fighting space.

• The casting is good and a little different than what we imagined. There have been major tweaks to some of the characters but overall it is enough to capture the essence of the film.

• The film is R-16 and some younger fans of the film might not be able to watch it in cinemas due to heavy bloodshed and violence. The film is similar to the Rorouni Kenshin film released in Manila - it is subbed (in original Japanese with subtitles in English)

• We still have many questions in the film that we hope could be answered by the second part coming this September.

Attack on Titan (Japanese: 進撃の巨人, Shingeki no Kyojin, lit. "Advancing Giants") is created by comics creator Hajime Isayama. Selling over million volumes in Japan, it was an instant hit when it debuted in 2011. The story is about the unknown future, humanity remembered, when Titans suddenly reappeared. The majority of the human race had been eaten and civilization collapsed. The survivors of the war built three walls to prevent the invasion of the Titans, and kept the peace by securing the living area inside. After a hundred years, the wall has not been broken... until the day the humans feared the most. The story of the live-action movie will be based on the manga but will include some original aspects and will be supervised by the author, Hajime Isayama.
