The Silent Film Festival runs from August 27 to 30, 2015 at the Shangri-La Plaza Cineplex.

• The International Silent Film Festival Manila opens this year with an Austrian classic, ORLACS HÄNDE (The Hands of Orlac)!
Presented by the Austrian Embassy, the film tells of Orlac, a renowned pianist who discovers that his medically transplanted hands have a life of their own. Accompanying the film live will be The Executives Band (of Raul S Manglapus).
Catch the screening on Thursday, August 27 at 8:00 PM at the Shangri-La Plaza Cinema 2.
• The Japan Foundation, Manila, in cooperation with the National Film Center of The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo and Shochiku Co., Ltd., is proud to feature four short comedy films from 1929-1932!
In this series, Kokushi Muso (Peerless Patriot) by Director Masaku Itami (1932) will be followed by Wasei Kenka Tomodachi (Fighting Friends - Japanese Stykle) and Tokkan Kozo (A Straightforward Boy) by Director Yasujiro Ozu (1929). The series ends with Ishikawa Goemon no Hoji (A Buddhist Mass for Goemon Ishikawa) by Director Torajiro Saito (1930). The series will be accompanied with live musical performance from Hidden Nikki.
Kokushi Muso (Peerless Patriot) by Director Mansaku Itami (1932). First film in a series of short comedy silent films from Japan!
Synopsis:
This film tells the story of Ise Isenokami, a master swordsman, and his impostor. It is revealed that the pretender is actually stronger than the real swordsman. After his first defeat, Isenokami trains himself and tries to beat the fake. When he loses again, he mumbles, "He who is right lost against he who is not right." The impostor replies: "It is not the right one who wins. He who wins is right."
Tokkan Kozo (A Straightforward Boy) by Director Yasujiro Ozu (1929) as well. This is the third film for the Japan series.
Synopsis:
Some children are playing hide and seek. Bunkichi kidnaps a boy Tetsubo with an appetite for sweets. Unable to keep him under control, the kidnapper returns him to his boss, who refuses to take him back. He tries to dump him on his playmates, but he incites them to demand toys and other goodies from him.
Ishikawa Goemon no Hoji (A Buddhist Mass for Goemon Ishikawa) by Director Torajiro Saito (1930). This is the final silent film in the Japan series!
Synopsis:
Goro Ishikawa, a descendant of Goemon Ishikawa, a legendary robber of the Edo period, brings a cauldron to an antique shop. Goro wants to marry Sayoko, the shop-owner's daughter. Refused by her father, Goro decides to elope with Sayoko. At night, Sayoko's father beats him to death. As a ghost Goro is so timid that he cannot get Sayoko. His timidity disposed Goemon, Goro's famous ancestor, to revive from the grave, persuade Sayoko’s father and make the couple marry.
The Royal Thai Embassy in Manila cordially invites you to join the screening of the Thai film “The Overture” which will be accompanied by the Royal Thai Navy Traditional Ensemble.
The film was based on the life of the palace musician, Laung Pradith Phairao or Sorn Silapabanleng, master of Ranad-Ek (Thai traditional wooden xylophone), who fought to preserve the traditional music of Thailand by using his musical talent during 1940s when the country began to experience changes both in culture and administration influenced by western modernization and ideologies.

Experience 65 minutes of 1920s urban life and jazz music at the screening of the German silent film BERLIN, DIE SINFONIE DER GROßSTADT!
The Goethe-Institut Philippinen is showing this film about a typical day in Berlin in 1927 with all its energy and quirks. Presenting the metropolis of Berlin as a pulse of modern life, director Walther Ruttmann experimented with forms, colors and rhythm and so will musician Pierre Oser and the band BIG JAZZ BALLOON as they accompany the film.

The Spanish entry is DON JUAN TENORIO, directed by Ricardo Baños in 1922. This film is one of the many versions based on the very popular Spanish play penned by José Zorrilla in 1844. The plot is about Don Juan, the prototype of womanizer who goes through life destroying female reputations, laughing at those who beg him to change his ways and thinking he's invincible. Now he plans the ultimate challenge --seducing a young novice about to take holy vows.

Tomekichi and his friend Yoshizo get acquainted with Omitsu, a homeless girl. The two pals love her, but she loves another, Okamura. In fact, however, the geisha turns out to be Okamura's sister. Okamura marries Omitsu.
