Movie Review: The Legend of Hercules
I saw the trailer of "The Legend of Hercules" last year and it looked promising. The trailer showcased the color grading similar to 300, action sequences similar to epic period shows (Spartacus) and the starring role of Hercules is given to that good-looking guy from Twilight, Kellan Lutz. The main goal of the film is to give the viewers a deeper look into the untold past of the half-god hero of ancient Greece.
Here is an overview of the plot of the film. In Ancient Greece 1200 B.C., a queen succumbs to the lust of Zeus to bear a son promised to overthrow the tyrannical rule of the king and restore peace to a land in hardship. But this prince, Hercules, knows nothing of his real identity or his destiny. He desires only one thing: the love of Hebe, Princess of Crete, who has been promised to his own brother. When Hercules learns of his greater purpose, he must choose: to flee with his true love or to fulfill his destiny and become the true hero of his time. The story behind one of the greatest myths is revealed in this action-packed epic - a tale of love, sacrifice and the strength of the human spirit.
My thoughts on the movie was in between I think I was expecting too much and the movie didn't quite ended legendary. (May contain spoilers*) Kellan Lutz' acting lacks the force that was expected from the half-god character of Hercules who is played by several good actors already. His physique may have been perfect for the role but the heroic spirit of bravery and passion didn't connect to the audience. Most of the actors and actresses acted flat and lacking of real intense emotions needed by tragic and dramatic scenes. The action scenes are good but I think the action scenes in the first "Spartacus" series was way better.The dialogues are a little bit cheesy and their diction and pronunciation/accents were disappointing. Using a material like Hercules comes with a great responsibility to make something beyond expectations.
The cinematography of the film is good at some scenes but off on some sequences. I felt that the scene where the heavens sent Hercules the divine lightning from Zeus was horrible. It was a big-turn off in the film. The CG of the scene and how it was executed felt like it's not from a good quality movie. The costumes and make-up are good but it would fall far behind "Game of Thrones" quality of set-design and production. Some of the frames looks uneasy and the feel of perspective tends to be bend. Some elements that are in the foreground are out of proportion compared to the bigger elements in the background. If ever this film would afford to make a sequel I hope they would improve absolutely everything. (Oh Kellan Lutz, please be better in your next films) Another thing, the collateral used in Metro Manila for this film lacks visual impact and unprofessional looking.
This movie lacks the intense flavors expected in an epic film.
