Angelina Jolie replaces Tom Cruise in Salt; Movie Trailer released

Did you know that the action thriller film Salt is not originally meant to star Angelina Jolie?

Yup! And it does not originally have a female protagonist.

The original lead character in Salt is first offered to Tom Cruise. The male lead character is named Edwin A. Salt, a CIA agent accused of being a Russian sleeper spy. Tom Cruise refused to play the part because he feared Edwin Salt's character is very close to the character of Ethan Hunt in Mission Impossible. It would be like playing the brother or cousin of a character he has played in another movie.

Salt script rewritten for Angelina Jolie

Someone in Columbia Pictures suggested Angelina Jolie for the role. Then the script was sent to Angelina and she liked it. Then the writer, director and producer visited Angelina in France to discuss script and character change.

The new character is now named Evelyn Salt, who have to go on the run to defend herself and her husband from the company she had served.

It was not only a change in the gender of the lead character, of course. The dialogue and character development were also altered to fit the new protagonist.

Salt Plot Summary/Synopsis

In Columbia Picture's Salt, Angelina Jolie stars as Evelyn Salt, a CIA agent who swore an oath to duty, honor, and country. When she is accused by a defector of being a Russian sleeper spy, Salt goes on the run to clear her name and ultimately prove she is a patriot. Using all her skills and years of experience as a covert operative, she must elude capture and protect her husband or the world's most powerful forces will erase any trace of her existence.

Salt Movie Trailer

Columbia Pictures has just released the movie trailer of Salt which gives out the skeletal plot of the film. Evelyn Salt was accused of being a Russian spy who is about to kill the President. Then the chase begins, which involves Angelina Jolie jumping off a bridge and landing on the roof of a trailer truck. Funny how that scene seems impossible and yet we go to the cinemas to watch and believe it.

Salt is directed by Philip Noyce and written by Brian Helgeland and Kurt Wimmer. It has a US release date of July 23, 2010.
