Walt Disney's The Princess and the Frog stirs up controversy!

This was in the news last week.

Walt Disney Pictures newest upcoming animated film, "The Princess and the Frog" was on the hot seat last week because of the movie's plot and characters. The animated movie contains an African-American lady who becomes a princess to a frog prince. In Walt Disney's tradition of giving moviegoers a rags-to-riches fairy tale princess animated story, we can take note that all of their princesses that they have featured in films were all white-skinned (Snow White, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty). But in this upcoming animated film, The Princess and the Frog, Walt Disney is casting their first-ever black princess.

For while Princess Tiana and many in the cartoon cast are black – the prince is not. Which has led some critics to complain that Disney has ducked the opportunity for a fairytale ending for a black prince and princess. While some have hailed Disney’s decision as a reflection of melting pot America, others say the company is sending out a mixed message. (Source)

The Princess and the Frog is jam-packed with the Walt Disney's traditional magic touch of musicals, unbelievable characters, talking animals, evil plot, funny scenes and witty and humorous lines in an animated movie. I think with all of these ingredients in an animated film like The Princess and the Frog, Walt Disney Pictures never intended to make this animated movie to raise an issue on racism.

I personally think that Walt Disney's move on casting Princess Tiana on The Princess and the Frog is really good. It's about time that African-American heroes/heroines will shine in any films or movies, animated or not! Kudos to your good work Walt Disney Pictures!

The Princess and the Frog Summary/Synopsis

When the free-spirited, jazz-loving Prince Naveen of Maldonia (Bruno Campos) comes to town, a deal with a shady voodoo doctor (Keith David) goes bad and the once suave royal is turned into a frog. In a desperate attempt to be human again, a favor in exchange for a fateful kiss on the lips from the beautiful girl, Tiana (Anika Noni Rose), takes an unexpected turn and leads them both on a hilarious adventure through the mystical bayous of Louisiana to the banks of the almighty Mississippi and back in time for Mardi Gras in New Orleans. An unforgettable tale filled with music, humor and heart where two frogs—along with the help of a 197-year-old voodoo priestess, a love-sick Cajun firefly, and a trumpet-playing alligator—discover that what they want isn’t as important as what they need.
